Z and I had planned to take them wine tasting up north of town. We had purchased a Groupon awhile back for a tasting for two and a bottle of wine, but never got around to using it. This seemed like a perfect time!
After a 25min drive we arrived at Basignani Winery in Sparks, Maryland. It is a small winery, owned and operated by a husband and wife team (and their two adorable border collies).
With the extreme temperatures we were excited to take refuge in their air conditioned tasting room. It was a large open space, with an eclectic collection of old dusty wine bottles and other memorabilia.
Some of the wines are even named after the owner’s children, which is a fun family touch.
Z loved most of the dry reds, which were a little too dry for my liking. Kevin and Victoria, being the red-lovers that they are, enjoyed the second part of the tasting. My mom’s tastes are varied so she found favorites in both categories.
As for me, I didn’t find any dry whites that I loved, I’m not a fan of reds (they taste too smokey) and the sweet whites were TOO sweet (like drinking candy). So what’s a girl to do? The answer–Sangria. They bottle their own and it was delicious and refreshing and perfect for a warm day. They also made a white variety, but surprisingly the red hit the spot for me.
After the tasting we took a brief walk into the vineyard to see the grapes on the vines. They still have a little ways to go as harvest time isn’t until September.
While we were there they were setting up for movie night. They apparently have them every Friday, setting up an inflatable screen out in the lawn. People are invited to bring blankets and picnics and enjoy some wine and a movie. The real selling point for me was that the owner’s wife makes homemade brick oven pizzas for the event as well. Pizza, wine and movie. Z and I will TOTALLY coming back for that.
QUESTION OF THE DAY: What is your wine preference? White? Red? Sweet? Dry?
